SummerCollab transforms educational outcomes for low-income children by equipping community-based institutions and schools with the curricular, academic, and organizational resources, to execute extraordinary summer learning programs. SummerCollab employs and trains top teachers, high school and college students to help them do it. In 2017, SummerCollab received the National Summer Learning Association Excellence Award for its innovative and impactful approach to making summer smarter.
SummerCollab focuses intensively on summer learning because leading education researchers today point to the summer opportunity gap as a key cause of the achievement gap. To be precise, two thirds of the achievement gap is attributable to summer learning inequity. To solve this problem, SummerCollab specializes in empowering community based agencies to execute high quality summer learning programs.
Last year, SummerCollab helped nearly 2,000 kids reverse learning loss in vocabulary, phonics and sight word recognition. This year, SummerCollab will aim higher. Through its alliances with nearly 40 community partners, cultural institutions and schools, SummerCollab will engage Delaware’s highest need youth in dynamic, effective learning institutions that meet precise literacy deficits, grow critical thinking skills, and deepen sense of self. WHAT IS TYLER’S CAMP?
Tyler’s Camps are SummerCollab’s 4-5th Grade and Middle School Academies, which welcome students from diverse backgrounds and interests to engage in exploratory and educational programming. At its 5 Tyler’s Camp Academies across the state of Delaware, SummerCollab executes inspiring, confidence-building experiences that fuel student motivation and success during the academic school year.
Participation at Tyler’s Camp offers a wide variety of programming, including art, music, athletic, technology, and dance, paired with world class project-based learning experiences for students to choose from. Through a variety of high quality and immersive experiences, students see growth in their motivation, self-esteem, critical thinking, leadership and entrepreneurial skills.
All 4th-5th Grade and Middle School Academy Campuses target a wide variety of students, providing a high concentration of arts, hands-on technology, and athletic options, alongside targeted literacy supports for those needs outlined through diagnostic tools. Tyler’s Camps are now open to rising 4th graders through rising 9th graders.
At Tyler’s Camp, students are free to explore their personal interests and grow their skill in areas of their choosing – all while practicing problem solving, leadership, and literacy skills. Tyler’s Camp brings together diverse, robust and high quality community based partners and schools who – together – amplify the collective ability to serve Delaware’s youth.
The Tyler’s Camp Director works with SummerCollab and Strive, a leadership-development consultant, to oversee the management of the camp. Strive is dedicated to spreading the power of character-driven leadership to underserved communities. The Camp Director’s role is critical to the camp staff and students, supervising them and ensuring the students’ capacity to access and meaningfully engage in high quality enrichment opportunities.
The Tyler’s Camp Director will serve as the manager-in-chief at their campsite, starting with the hiring process which they will oversee during the spring. The Camp Director will be responsible for coordinating communications, resources, deadlines, and feedback to all levels of staff. Additionally, the Camp Director will serve as a liaison between SummerCollab and its partner sites to satisfy logistical needs throughout the pre-season and the summer.
The Camp Director should keep in mind that the fulfillment of their responsibilities goes to serve the children who have enrolled at their camp. Every decision the Camp Director makes should have the campers’ best interest at heart; this includes their safety, their learning, their sense of self, and more. With this in mind, the Camp Director will envision and orchestrate the kind of environment that meets their needs.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
SummerCollab is looking for outstanding and engaging leaders to direct SummerCollab camps located throughout the State of Delaware. Each Camp Director assumes the overall leadership, culture, and oversight of a specific camp location to ensure that the camp goals are met or exceeded. He or she is an active participant in the team and cultivates a strong working relationship with a staff of teachers, instructors, counselors, and specialists. The ideal candidate is able to plan into the future with the big picture in mind, while able to make snap decisions when in the moment. He/she thinks on systemic terms but pay careful attention to the details. The ideal candidate trusts camp staff, knows how to delegate, but also knows when to intervene.
Preparation and Management of All Camp Activities
- Hire a staff through candidates recruited and preliminarily interviewed by SummerCollab and searchable on SummerCollab microsite
- Review and approve lesson plans/ courses submitted by camp staff prior to start of camp
- Review site specific materials provided by camp team, including regulations, norms, host site preferences, safety, etc. related to your specific campsite
- Work with your Tyler’s Camp leaders team to ensure seamless execution of camp culture and content in line with culture and values at your site
- Work with team leadership and camp staff to ensure students are engaged and supported and actively learning in each session
- Debrief with instructors daily and make changes to optimize for student experiences based on their feedback
- Work with Tyler’s Camp Team and Community Stakeholders to meet and exceed camp goals
- Attend Trainings, Meetings, Coaching and Feedback Sessions during the spring and summer months
- Review Tyler’s Camp Handbook and complete any required forms prior to the start of summer
- Attend all mandatory meetings or debriefs
